Comment by Jodi June 18, 2008 @ 8:53 amHope your trip to Guatemala went well. Did you get any sleep on the plane?? I would probably guess not with all those crazy girls! Sorry to hear you get the crippled one in your group – just prop her up somewhere with a paint brush and I’m sure she can get something accomplished. I told Kelly to tell you that Kevin is definitely missing you more than he is his sister!! Somehow I think he’d rather play golf with you than Kelly. Hope all goes well, stay safe and healthy, keep Kelly in line and try to make sure she doesn’t take too many babies back with her!
Praying for a great and an amazing trip for all of you!
Love, Kelly (and Kevin’s) mom

I can only imagine the beautiful country you are in. I missed all the singing from you this morning but I am sure that the team you are with will be enjoying it instead. Love you lots and praying God opens doors for you to spread the word of Christ Psalm ll2 Praise the Lord! For all who fear God and trust in him are blessed beyond expression!

Comment by Jodi Berens June 19, 2008 @ 8:42 pmHope Kelly is pulling her weight down there and not relying on you too much to pick up the slack!! Thanks for being on her team,, I’m sure she won’t say it, but I’m sure she appreciates it! We’re praying that all is going well and that you have safe travels back to the base tomorrow. We are so anxious to hear from all of you, but we know that not hearing anything also means that things are going well. Hope everyone is feeling well and trying to get rested up from your trip down there. Take care, give lots of hugs to the kids and enjoy each and every precious moment there.
Love to you all,
Momma Berens!
PS. Kevin is looking for a golf partner when you return!!
Hey spinner! I so glad to hear you guys made it down there safely. It sounds like you have it a little rougher this year than when I was there 6 years ago! Continue to let your light shine and you will be in our prayers all week! Love you!
Comment by Leighann (sissy) June 19, 2008 @ 10:53 pm(My house has red, yellow, green, etc. in it and I would love placemats or a table runner. Work your magic and I’ll take anything!)
Spencer,
Praying for you, the team and the families who will experience the dedication of their homes today. I hope you have been healthy and have a safe trip back to the base! (Maybe you could give Lex that hug we talked about – thanks:))
Praying for you!
Comment by Beverly Berens June 20, 2008 @ 7:34 amHey Spinner,
Comment by Marcus June 20, 2008 @ 9:51 amHope the trip is treating you well down there. Our whole family is praying for you constantly (as mentioned above) and so I am. Mom misses your singing around here but she continually tells me that I am 10x better so you can stay down there if you want. May the Lord use you to change the hearts of many Guatemalanians (sp?).
Peace Bro, Markie
Spencer:
Know that we are praying for you as you are on journey #2 to Guatemala–a land that you love and that loves you! We hope you get to see Gloria again this year but know that if you don’t, there will be another little one (many) who captures your heart.
We pray that today’s dedication will be one where families find new shelter for their physical bodies and a new home for their spiritual souls–one that will be for all eternity. How cool to be used by God in such an amazing and powerful way!
Be completely open to all that God can/will do through you. He will give you the strength to do all that He calls you to do. That is His sure promise.
God bless you,
The Dooleys

Comment by Lynette Dooley June 20, 2008 @ 11:19 amWe are like clay jars in which this treasure (of the gospel) is stored. The real power comes from God and not from us.
Spencer, Marcus makes it sound like a New Testament book the way he spelled “Guatemalanians”. Come to think of it, you are doing New Testament work and fullfilling the Great Commission. We are praying for you and the group and hope to hear from you soon.
Love you,
Comment by Rog Vanderheide June 20, 2008 @ 3:14 pmDad
Hi Spencer, Did you get to build steps for anyone there yet? I’m sure you have paved steps to Heaven for some of the wonderful people of Guatemala. Work hard and stay healthy!

Hey Spence!
Comment by Abby and Larissa June 21, 2008 @ 2:27 amWe hung out with your friends tonight and no one knew what to do without you… PLEASE come back…we almost played four-square-lol!!! We miss you, and we hope you are having fun
Spencer!
Comment by Jodi Berens June 21, 2008 @ 9:00 amSure seems weird this year without all of your updates. Your updates were the ones we could always go to and find out what was going on. Hope you are well and not too tired (especially with having “crip” on your team). I’m hoping she’s doing her fair share of work!! It sounds like from the latest news and you’re having an exciting trip and we are all so anxious to hear more, but know there is a reason behind all this. It truly makes us realize that God is in control and it’s out of our hands. Take care, stay safe and try to get plenty of rest! Hope you get to spend some quality time with Gloria!! Give her a big hug from all of us here.
Love, Mother Berens (Katelyn R’s new nickname for me)
Spencer I am praying that we hear from you today. Even if you read our postings I would be happy. I cannot wait to hear how things are going for you and the team. Life at the Vanderheides is quiet. Now Dad and I know how the empty nesters feel. Graham is gone to someones cottage. Marcus bops in once in a while but other than that Quiet City. Oh except Lola came over to play with Ivy because Leighann and Andy had a wedding to go to. By the way Cory E. was working on his film project this past week. That was a bummer that you couldnt observe that. I t has been a georgeous week here for golf. We have had no air on in the house at all. Graham hasnt played all week because of basketball evening camp and his sprained pinky finger. He is rather bummed about it. Well thats the update. I will check in later to see if you are up and running yet. Wait till you see how many hits this sight has had. It is amazing Spencer to know how covered in prayer you and the team have been these five days. Love you Love you

Comment by Emma and Olivia Talsma June 21, 2008 @ 11:33 pmDear Spencer, Thought I should write to just say hi and tell you that the pics on the site are so fun to see…as soon as we saw the posting yesterday we were calling people to get them on the site and writing again. I will also try to have a talk with Marcus to let him know that you can’t write cuz that is out of your hands ! I am sure he understands. Anyway, Graham has been crying himself to sleep the last two nights due to missing you. We are eager for you all to return and give us all the exciting stories and God sightings, know that amazing things have been happening. Love to all the team, God is using you. cp

Comment by Carole Pettijohn June 23, 2008 @ 9:15 amSpence!! Hope all is well there. The most recent pictures seem to show that everyone looks well! Grammy didn’t seem to miss you too much (we saw him this morning at tennis), but then maybe he didn’t quite want to admit it. Your mom mentioned that your house seemed pretty empty without you and Graham there, well, our house felt pretty much the same. Looks like we need to have another pool party/fire soon. Hope you have a safe trip back.
Comment by Jodi Berens June 23, 2008 @ 1:57 pmLove, Mother Berens
hello everyone, im at mcdonalds right now and my mcflurry is glorious…so much better than PB and J..i have so many stories to tell with no time at all so this will be short……
last night we were returning from our clinic which went amazing and satan tried to slow us down…..first one of our vans ran out of brake fluid so the red van had to go in the middle just incase it couldnt stop it would run into the van ahead of us…just like in the movies….then as we were driving down a dark street 12 men in black masks and black bags over their heads stopped our van…..they also had weapons…..but the lord was protecting us and although we were all scared to death as \larry put it….”what we didn’t see was the thousands of angels surrounding us at that point”…next the van without brakes went out of control downhill and the driver swerved off the road and into a sidebank…….the only place on the whole road that would have stopped the van without falling over a cliff………your prayers were there with us!
woke up this morning to the news i won’t be able to see Gloria….i didnt know what to do…..that was one of the main reasons i came on this trip and anticipation for a year building up to this day then BAM….done………but kevin the miracle worker is trying to pull some strings and I may get to see her tonight….
God is good, all the time, all the time, God is good,
Spener
Comment by Spencer June 23, 2008 @ 2:15 pmSpencer, I have been praying for you and the safety of the group. Looks like I am going to have to pray a little harder based on your latest blog! Hope it does work out for you to see Gloria.

P.S. Make sure the van has extra break fluid along this time.

Thank You everyone who followed along and prayed for us. We could feel your prayers throughout the entire trip. God showed me his holy spirit this week and also the power of prayer in the same night, it was truly amazing. Guatemala is a trip I wouldn’t not only suggest you make in your life but DEMAND it, the impact it has on you cannot be described in words.
